For the second year, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, in partnership with Animal Law Italia, has organised a course on animal rights. The course is the Jean Monnet Module “WHALE” Working on non-Human Animals Law and rights in the Eu (2023-2026), funded by the European Union, which takes place in the spring semester every year for three years.
The lessons offer in-depth thematic analysis of international law, European Union law and the Italian legal system, with comparative insights, and will be delivered by Ca’ Foscari lecturers, Animal Law Italia lawyers, and experts and academics from other universities.
The course is also open to lawyers and trainee lawyers, attending in person. An online option is also available, but only for participants enrolled outside the Venice Bar district, or in special cases where attending in person is impossible.
Compared with last year’s programme, which consisted of 10 lessons, the teaching offer has been expanded: the spring 2025 course features 13 lessons of 4 hours each (the calendar is available here). The opening lesson of the course is structured as a conference event, also lasting 4 hours, and is open to those not enrolled in the course as well. To obtain the certificate of full attendance, participation in (at least) 10 lessons, chosen from those on offer, is required.
Lessons will take place from February to June on Friday afternoons. A series of workshops and side activities, with optional attendance, is also planned.
The first session (lecture-conference) is scheduled for 7 February, and the final lesson will be held on 13 June.
The Venice Bar Council has granted 20 professional training credits in general subjects (awarded to those attending at least 20 lessons), as well as a separate specific recognition of 3 training credits in general subjects for participation in the introductory opening conference on 7 February 2025.
